Cuts expected today in advance of free agency
SAN DIEGO -- The Chargers came to financial terms with a veteran player Wednesday. But alas, it was not the contractual agreement fans have been waiting for all week.
There isn't an L or a T in Kynan Forney, an offensive lineman who inked a two-year deal that espn.com says is worth $4.8 million after a season in which he didn't get a second of playing time.
It's not that the 6-foot-3, 302-pound blocker with surprising athleticism couldn't help a Chargers team looking to revamp its right offensive flank. The news just seemed a bit insignificant with LaDainian Tomlinson's San Diego tenure hanging in the balance.
Things have been that way since Tomlinson's representatives met with the Chargers on Sunday at the NFL Combine to renegotiate the star running back's contract. Little is known about the discussions, the team's contract offer or Tomlinson's opinion of it, as both camps have gone quiet in recent days.
A restructured deal was initially expected by Thursday, when general manager A.J. Smith meets with the media to discuss offseason plans.
The NFL free-agent signing period begins at 9 p.m. that evening, and Smith typically announces cuts and how the team will address certain needs in the hours preceding it. The Chargers normally have a solid grasp on their salary cap room and how they will use it by this time, but the Tomlinson situation -- which has no deadline and may go on into the weekend -- leaves plans in flux.
Smith hasn't shed light on what will be announced Thursday, but some moves are expected. Right guard Mike Goff and defensive end Igor Olshansky will likely be allowed to leave as unrestricted free agents. Wide receiver Malcom Floyd and defensive back Cletis Gordon, both restricted free agents, will likely be tendered offers to increase the chances the Chargers receive draft compensation should another team exceed the team's offer.
Should the Chargers continue their recent tendencies, players like defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, linebacker Ray Lewis or any other top-tier unrestricted free agent won't be wearing a lightning bolt next season. The Chargers haven't been big players in the free-agent market during Smith's tenure. That also makes it difficult to speculate on possible second and third-tier free agent signings until cuts are formally announced.
