SAN DIEGO - About the only thing longer than Chris Chambers' cross-country flight was the smile on his face.
The receiver the Chargers acquired from Miami on Tuesday arrived in San Diego around midnight and was on the practice field Wednesday afternoon after spending much of the morning meeting with receivers coach James Lofton
"The excitement just keeps building," Chambers said after Wednesday's practice. "Once I stepped out here today, I knew it was for real."
Chambers spent time acclimating himself with the offense and Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and said the offense is very similar to the system in Miami, where former Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is the head coach.
Because of Chambers' familiarity with system, Chargers coach Norv Turner said he expects Chambers to be ready to play when the Chargers host Houston on Oct. 28. The Chargers have a bye this Sunday.
"There are a few words that end up being a little different, but the most important thing is the routes are the same, the techniques are the same and the physical parts are the same," Turner said. "I don't think it will take him and Philip long to get on the same page."
Revolving door
Chambers played under four different head coaches, six different offensive coordinators and 10 different quarterbacks in seven seasons in Miami. Ironically, Turner's two seasons in Miami (2002-03) represent his longest stint under one coordinator while Jay Fiedler (2001-04) was the only quarterback he worked with for a substantial time period.
"I felt like I haven't been able to really maximize my abilities because of that," Chambers said.
Et cetera
Coach Norv Turner plans to spend the Sunday watching football. He noted that he'll be able to watch both of the team's next two opponents (Houston and Minnesota) on television. … New acquisition Chris Chambers will wear No. 89 with the Chargers. He wore No. 84 in Miami but that number belongs to WR Craig Davis.
