OCEANSIDE -- Finding a consistent groove has proven to be an elusive quest this season for the Fallbrook High girls water polo team.

Up one minute, down the next describes the Warriors' play.

But the Warriors were up on Thursday. Senior goalie Sydney Fitzpatrick had seven saves to lead Fallbrook to a 14-0 nonleague victory over Oceanside at Brooks Street Pool.

Seven different players scored at least one goal.

"The encouraging thing for us was how many girls got goals," Fallbrook coach Bob Lamont said. "It's nice to see that many girls get the ball in scoring chances and come through.

"Also, shutouts don't happen very often."

Fitzpatrick's toughest save came in the third quarter when a backhanded shot caught her off guard, but she blocked it with her shoulder and the side of her head.

The rest of the time, she had a pretty easy day as her offense continually beat the Pirates (3-5) down the pool for easy scoring opportunities.

Fallbrook (6-5) scored on its first chance just 15 seconds into the game as Demi Barrett tallied her first of two goals. The lead rose to 4-0 after the first quarter and 9-0 at halftime.

Fallbrook added four more goals in the third quarter before settling for one final score in the last stanza.

"We've been that team before," said Fallbrook senior Neika Maryn, who had a game-high four goals. "You know that feeling well. We lost to Vista 11-1 last year. It stinks. You can't wait to get out of the pool.

"Even games like this help us because a lot of us have played together for a long time and we're getting better. It's starting to come together."

Oceanside got 10 saves from senior goalie Vanessa Fenley, most of them coming on fastbreaks ahead of the defense.

"I thought their goalie was awesome in the first quarter," Lamont said. "She made us adjust to get it going."

But the Warriors' offense, which Maryn noted has struggled at times, was clicking all day.

Senior Kathryn Majdick and sophomore Hunter Bowman each had two goals. Senior Nicole Walker had two goals and four assists, and Barrett, a sophomore, added two assists to go with her two goals.

"We have trouble sometimes seeing the whole pool on offense," Maryn said. "I feel like we're strong on defense.

"It can be frustrating because we can see what we can be when the offense clicks. I hope it makes us work a little harder.

"Sure, it would be nice to wake up one day and have the offense roll like elite teams like Carlsbad and Vista. Those teams make it look so simple."
