Great Oak gets past Paloma in golf

Emerson Wood shot a 38 and Ryan Victor shot a 39 on Wednesday afternoon as Great Oak's golf team picked up a 201-233 nonleague victory over Paloma Valley at Redhawk Golf Club.

The Wolfpack improved to 19-1 with the win, while the Wildcats dropped to 8-12.

Paloma's Andrew Falero shot the low round of the day with a 36.

In other boys golf,

Murrieta Valley 182, Temescal Canyon 210 -- At the SCGA Golf Course, Rickie Fowler shot his second straight round of 33 to lead the Nighthawks to their fifth straight Southwestern League victory. Murrieta's Andrew Cortez shot a 34, Josh Anderson shot a 37 and Stephan Stallworth brought in a 38, as the Nighthawks improved to 5-0 in league and 16-1 overall. Stephen Edman led the Titans (3-4 in league) with a round of 39.

Vista Murrieta 215, Rancho Verde 273 -- At Temecula Creek Inn, the Broncos improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the Southwestern League. The Mustangs' Will Golden was the day's medalist with a round of 41.

Chaparral 194, Temecula Valley 200 -- At the SCGA Golf Course, Sean Yoon won medalist honors with a round of 35, but the Golden Bears (2-3) came up short in the Southwestern League match. Kyle Inman and Eugene Lee led the Pumas, each firing rounds of 37. Tony Darby (39) and Zack Ponder (39) aided in the win. Temecula Valley's Joe Nixon (38) and Cort Trejo (37) had solid rounds for the Bears.

Hemet 224, Elsinore 232 -- At Canyon Lake Country Club, Eric Bung fired a 1-over-par 37 and took medalist honors in Hemet's Sunbelt League win. Paul Iverson (45) led the Tigers (6-7, 3-5) in a losing effort. Bobby Eggleston and Zack Trovenko both carded 47 for Elsinore. With the victory, Hemet improved to 11-1, 7-1.

Linfield Christian 196, Calvary Chapel 246 -- At Cross Creek Golf Club, Robert Niederecker shot a 36 and Jon Fergus a 38 for Linfield (14-2, 7-0) in its Big Sky League victory. Jason Adams led Calvary with a 40.

In softball,

Lakeside 14, Perris Citrus Hill 3 -- At Lakeside, Krystal Kohlberg spun a three-hitter to pace the Lancers (6-4) to the nonleague victory. Kohlberg fanned nine Hawks batters and added a 2-for-4 day with the bat, including a three-run double. Other Lancers showing offensive punch were Josie Sostre (3-for-4, HR, triple), Kaie Waisanen (2-for-3, RBI) and Arianna Villasenor (2-for-3, RBI).

Great Oak 4, Twentynine Palms 0 -- At Great Oak, Natalie McNeff gave up just one hit, leading the Wolfpack (8-3, 5-0) to the De Anza League win. McNeff struck out nine Wildcats batters while allowing just three walks and added a two-run single in the sixth inning to secure the victory. Jessica Makwinski (2-for-2) and Alisha Bollinger (1-for-3, 2B) aided the offense.

In track and field,

Murrieta Valley 77, Temecula Valley 56 (boys); Murrieta Valley 76, Temecula Valley 60 (girls) -- At Temecula, the girls 200-meter run took the spotlight as Murrieta Valley's Kim Sherrod beat out the Golden Bears' Hanna Francescan by a slim .03 seconds in a battle of Southwestern League teams. Sherrod's time of 25.50 seconds nosed out Francescon's effort of 25.53 seconds. Francescan also grabbed first place in the 400 with a time of 59.7 seconds. Temecula Valley's Jonathan Williams was a triple winner, placing first in the 100 (10.51 seconds), 200 (21.16 seconds) and the long jump (21 feet, 7 inches). The Bears' Jake Johnson captured the pole vault at 14-0.

Vista Murrieta 89, Chaparral 47 (boys); Vista Murrieta 97, Chaparral 39 (girls) -- At Vista Murrieta, the host Broncos came away double winners in the Southwestern League meet, led by the Jazz Trice for the boys and Jasmine Weatherspoon for the girls. Trice took first in the 110 high hurdles (14.35 seconds), while Weatherspoon was a double winner in the 100 (12.63 seconds) and the 200 (26.63 seconds). The Broncos Heather Erickson's leap of 17 feet, four inches, in the long jump is a new school record, breaking her old mark, set two weeks ago, by two inches.

Nick Otto set a new Vista Murrieta long jump record with a leap of 20 feet, 10 1-2 inches, eclipsing his old mark of 20 feet, nine inches. Kazon Seaton captured the 100 in a time of 11.03 seconds. The Pumas Mike Powers record double wins in the 300 hurdles and triple jump, while Thomas Jackson was a two-time winner in the 200 (22.87) and 400 (50.93).

In baseball,

Great Oak 18, Twentynine Palms 2 -- At Great Oak, Danny Dwyer pitched six strong innings for the Wolfpack, leading his team to the De Anza League win. Dwyer (3.85 ERA) scattered four hits while striking out seven Wildcats to improve to 3-2. The hosts pounded out 17 hits, led by Andrew Irvine's (3-for-3) five-RBI day. Anthony Renteria (2-for-2) and John Nunley (2B) contributed to the offensive attack.

In swimming,

Temescal Canyon 92, Rancho Verde 61 (boys); Temescal Canyon 129, Rancho Verde 24 (girls) -- At Temescal Canyon, freshman Bart Kelly set school records in the 200 freestyle (1:53.80) and the 100 free (49.82) as the Titans swept a Southwestern League dual meet. A.J. Mallari also posted victories in the 200 IM (2:17.57) and the 100 fly (1:00.93). For the girls, Danielle Libring won the 100 free (58.59) and 100 back (1:08.76); Leah Janke won the 200 free (2:14.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:27.57) and Jesse Hansen won the 50 free (26.70). All three girls were on the winning 200 medley (2:11.27) and 200 freestyle (1:50.04) teams.

Murrieta Valley 128, Temecula Valley 32 (boys); Murrieta Valley 123, Temecula Valley 46 (girls) -- At Murrieta Valley, Michael Flanagan won the 200 freestyle (1:49.43) and 50 freestyle (22.74) and helped the 200 medley and 400 free relays to victories. Matt Preciado won the 200 IM (2:05.47) and the 100 free (50.77) and helped the 200- and 400-free relays to wins. For Murrieta's girls, Kirra Kylander won the 100 free (55.91) and the 200 free (2:01.40). Sydney Sonoda won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.14). For Temecula, Katie Palmer swam a 1:04.02 to win the 100 backstroke.

In boys tennis,

Elsinore 11, Hemet 7 -- At Hemet, Dan Nguyen Huu swep his singles match 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 to lead the Tigers to the Sunbelt League win. Teammate Mark Allen also won his singles match 7-5, 6-0, 6-0. The doubles combination of Alex Mobley and Josh Firmes needed one tiebreaker to win their match 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. The win help Elsinore keep its grip on first place at 10-2, 6-0, while the loss dropped Hemet to 4-2 in league matches.
