VISTA -- Quincy Lawson's mother, Georgetta, is quick. She has to be. She's a closed-captionist, someone who has to be lightning fast at typing on a computer keyboard.
As quick as she might be, Lawson's mom likely won't be fast enough to catch her youngest of four children and stop him from getting his next adrenaline fix.
"They call guys like me adrenaline junkies because we're always looking for something exciting to do," said Lawson, a two-sport star at Vista High. "We have to stay active, and so we're always looking for the next big thrill.
"The next two things I want to do is skydive and bungee jump."
Q: How is your mom going to take hearing that you want to skydive and go bungee jumping?
A: Now that I'm 18, I'm an adult, so she really can't stop me from doing what I want to do. She's not going to like this when she hears about it, but there's not much she can do to stop me.
Q: You still live in your parent's house. How are you going to pull that off?
A: I'm not going to tell her ahead of time. I'll wait until I get home after I've been skydiving or bungee jumping, and then tell her what I did. That way she won't get all freaked out about me going.
Q: What's next, after the bungee jumping and skydiving?
A: Really, I'm up for just about anything. I've been dirt bike riding already, so that's been done. I'll do just about anything that gets the adrenaline flowing.
Q: Have you ever been hurt trying to get an adrenaline rush?
A: The only time I've ever been hurt was a couple of years ago when I crashed on a motorcycle. I didn't get hurt too bad -- I scraped up my hands when I crashed.
Q: Did that injury affect your basketball season?
A: Not at all, because it happened during football season and I was playing in the band back then. But I couldn't play in the drumline that year because I couldn't hold the sticks. That's about the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
Q: What's the best thing to happen to you?
A: I'd have to say growing up with my three older brothers. They all pushed me to be the best I could be at whatever I was doing, especially Kenny. (Kenny, 20, was a standout player for Vista and is now the starting center for Creighton University.)
Q: What was it like trying to shoot over Kenny?
A: Kenny was 6-4 as a freshman in high school and now he's 6-10, so you can imagine he was never easy to shoot over. He was always blocking my shots.
Q: What did you learn from your other brothers?
A: When I was younger and playing basketball with them in the driveway or playground, they would never give me a break. They would always play me tight. They wanted me to learn to be aggressive and to never back down, and to go as hard as I could on the court. I think that helped Kenny because look where it's gotten him. And it has helped me, too because I've become a better basketball player and a better athlete overall.
Q: You are a long jumper during track season; does it help during the basketball season?
A: I do the long jump, the triple jump and I high jump, too. All three of them help me with flexibility. When the basketball season is over, I participate in track because it helps me stay in shape. Plus, I've got to be doing something all the time. I've got to keep that adrenaline pumping.
