SAN MARCOS -- Putting distractions aside has seemingly been a weekly challenge for the Mission Hills High football team, but on Friday night, the Grizzlies once again did what they do best -- win games.

The third-ranked Grizzlies took no prisoners while rolling to a 42-3 homecoming win over Ramona, as the Bulldogs failed to mount any offensive attack against a determined Mission Hills defense.

"We came out and played hard, and it was our homecoming so that made a difference," said senior defensive end Frank Gaines, who played like a man possessed while spending much of the night in the Ramona offensive backfield. "It was a fun time out there. At first, they were double-teaming me, but I started using a head fake and that got that out of the way."

Gaines had one of the Grizzlies' four sacks, recovered one of two Ramona fumbles and was in on numerous tackles for losses as the defensive front for Mission Hills (6-1, 3-0) had its way with a banged-up Ramona offense that was missing leading rusher Jarred Gallegos. With Gallegos sidelined by a groin injury, the Bulldogs (5-3, 1-3) went backward for minus-9 yards rushing and managed just 42 yards of total offense and six first downs.

"We were out-manned, out-gunned and out-coached," said Bulldogs coach Damon Baldwin. "If that's not a Division II championship team over there, I don't know what is. Their defensive line was just outstanding."

Mission Hills coach Chris Hauser agreed.

"Up front, we really gave them a handful," said Hauser, whose team is in the driver's seat in the Valley League. "Jamaar (Jarrett), Vince (Misa-Amituanai) and Eddie (Nuckols) are established players on the defensive line, and Frank has been waiting in the wings.

"He's a special player."

Offensively, the Grizzlies scored on four of their first five possessions, including DJ Zapata touchdown passes of 44 yards and 63 yards to Brennan Metzger and Joe Moreno. Metzger put an exclamation point on the half when he returned a punt 63 yards for a score just four seconds before halftime as the home team mounted a 35-0 advantage.

Zapata passed for 220 yards, completing 9-of-17 passes. The Grizzlies piled up 310 yards of offense in the first half alone.

If there were any concerns about any controversy regarding recent incidents involving players rooting at a volleyball match or gathering for postgame support sessions for injured teammate Scott Eveland, the Grizzlies weren't at all fazed.

"We just had to come out and do what we do best, and that's win games," said Metzger, who also had an 82-yard punt return for a score negated by a penalty. "We try to come out every day with a focus. Obviously, there's a lot going on, but we're just trying to do everything the right way."

Hauser was impressed with his team's concentration.

"The kids just find a way to clear their heads and play this great game of football," said Hauser, who found himself in the position of needing to discipline some of his players for making inappropriate comments last week at a girls volleyball match. "Kids are going to be kids, and that's at every high school in America.

"This is a learning situation, and I know our kids have good hearts and are not mean-spirited. We all make mistakes."

Those mistakes were far and few between on the field Friday night.

Mission Hills visits Orange Glen next week while Ramona hosts San Marcos for its homecoming game.
