POWAY -- Coming off an emotional doubleheader sweep of then No. 1-ranked Vista High on Saturday, Poway baseball coach Bob Parry was worried about an emotional letdown Wednesday against an improved El Camino club.

Three runs in the first inning and four more in the second put Parry's mind at ease as the No. 1-ranked Titans beat the Wildcats 9-4 in a Palomar League game.

"Seven runs early sure helped," Parry said. "But I thought we lost a little intensity and drive after that.

"Despite its record, El Camino (9-12, 1-6) is a good team.

"We did what we had to do to win."

The Titans (19-3, 7-0) benefitted from 10 walks, four of those scoring.

"That's the difference in the game," said El Camino coach Joe Gonzales. "This is a tough day and every game is a battle.

"Poway's a good hitting team, so to give them 10 extra base runners isn't good.

"Still, I thought we had some good at-bats early (scoring single runs in the first and second innings and two more in the third).

"We're playing people tough, but it hasn't translated into many wins yet. Still, I told the boys to enjoy the competition because it's good in the Palomar League."

Third baseman Dillon Dooney had a big day at the plate for Poway, which has now won 10 games in a row. He singled, doubled and drove in three runs.

Steve Halcomb drove in two runs and scored twice.

Catcher Austin Wynns, the man who handles Poway's deep and talented pitching staff, had two hits, scored twice, stole a base and drive in a run.

He also threw out a runner stealing and made a tough catch on a pop up for a complete offensive and defensive day.

"We had to come out with the same intensity we had against Vista," Wynns said. "I'm the catcher, one of the senior leaders, and it's my job to make sure that happens.

"We're thinking positive here. No negative thoughts. We want to sweep every series and you can't do that unless you win the first game.

"I really love playing an all-around game."

A big part of Wynns' job is managing the Poway pitching staff.

Keegan Yuhl started for the Titans and allowed all four runs. Matt Rossio followed with two shutout innings and Chad Smith closed it out.

"Keegan had a little bit of a rough outing, but he kept us in the game," Wynns said. "The great thing about our coaches is that they know how to use the pitching staff.

"Keegan is a hard thrower. So just when they started to get used to his fastball, they bring in Rossio. Rossio's a slider-ball guy. Coming in behind Keegan, that slider is tough to hit.

"It's really a fun staff to catch, and a fun team to be on."
