CARMEL VALLEY ---- Both teams came into the game winless, but one was clearly better in the end, as Torrey Pines High shut out Poway 42-0 in a nonleague matchup at Ed Burke Field on Friday night.
"We had a lot of close losses before this game, but our kids kept their heads up," Torrey Pines coach Scott Ashby said. "Our kids dug deep to get this win."
The Falcons racked up 428 total yards ---- 272 rushing and 156 passing. Junior running back John Wilson rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, while senior Joe Driscoll had 82 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Junior quarterback John Cabot threw two TD passes, both to senior wide receiver Ryan Rodas. Cabot was 5-of-12 for 156 yards for the Falcons (3-1).
The Titans (0-4) have suffered numerous injuries at running back, so their fifth-string ball-carrier was left to carry most of the load. He did a good job, too. Sophomore Evan Gray, called up from junior varsity, rushed 21 times for 98 yards.
