Aimee Bird, a senior setter at Tri-City Christian High, has orally committed to play volleyball at the U.S. Naval Academy.
The 5-foot-11 second-team All-CIF San Diego Section pick helped the Eagles win section Division V championships in 2006 and '07. She also considered Point Loma Nazarene before choosing to go to Annapolis, Md.
"I wasn't sure about Navy at first last spring, but on my visit in September I got a chance to see the campus, talk with the players and see how they live," Bird said. "It still took about three months of thinking about it because the five-year (military) commitment after school was always there."
Bird won't pick a major until after her second year at Annapolis, and she must choose between a commission in the Navy or Marine Corps by the end of her third year.
"I'd never thought about going into the military at all," she said. "It was one of those things that just happened."
