ENCINITAS -- One moment Jon Foreman was in a surf competition at Moonlight Beach, holding his own in contest, and the next he was working the stage as frontman for his multi-platinum rock band Switchfoot.
Foreman, the lead singer, advanced to the finals of the Surf Joust division in the fifth annual Switchfoot Bro-Am on Saturday.Â
In this discipline, surfers ride foam boards and are armed with soft-tipped swords that they use to knock fellow competitors off their boards while riding a wave. Event winner Justin Kote eliminated Foreman in the final minutes of the heat.
"I weigh a little bit more than the other guys so I use gravity and pent-up aggression," Kote said.
In the Bro-Am division, professional surfers competed alongside amateurs in a four-man team format. Team O'Neill, which included pros Cory Lopez and Kyle Knox, as well as amateurs Austin Ganz and Noah Erickson, won the event against Team Billabong, which included Dane Zahn, Philip Goold, Ryan Arthur and Cam Richards.
Competitors were required to surf one wave riding with their natural stance, and one switchfoot, with is the opposite foot forward. They would then run onto the shore and tag their partners who had to do the same.
For Lopez, who surfed the ASP World Tour from 1997-2007, this event marked the first time he surfed D Street at Moonlight Beach and the first time in years he rode switch.
"Like eight years ago I was riding switch a little bit, but I did more switch today than I have in ten years," Lopez said. "I felt like I was getting better as the day went on."
Lopez said he was happy to be invited to the charity event. All proceeds benefit the San Diego and Oceanside chapters of StandUp For Kids, a nonprofit organization that aids homeless and at-risk children.
