David Kerr, 74

CARLSBAD - David J. Kerr, 74, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, of a prolonged illness.

Born Aug. 19, 1926, in Reading, Pa., he lived in Carlsbad for 23 years. He retired in 1980 from Naval Investigative Services. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a corporal and the Naval Reserves as a captain. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Association of Retired Naval Investigative Service Special Agents.

Mr. Kerr was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Kerr and brother Francis Kerr. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris N. Kerr of Carlsbad; sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Tracy Kerr of Fort Collins, Colo., and Greg and Shauna Kerr of Bakersfield; daughters and sons-in-law Denlise and Billy McManus of Humble, Texas, Diane and John Cox of Marion, Ill., and Jackie Bloemke of Gilbert, Ariz.; brother Bob Kerr of Reading, Pa.; sisters and brother-in-law Mary and Bill Hogan of Phoenix and Louise Rumsey of Perkasie, Pa.; and grandchildren Sean and Brian McManus, Kelly and Lindsey Kerr, Erin and Matt Cox, Sherah Richardson and Kyle Kerr and Ryan and Shannon Bloemke.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Coleman officiating. Interment will be at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. A private cremation is planned.

Homer Smith, 80

OCEANSIDE - Homer Ray Smith, 80, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Oceanside Oceana Community Center of a heart attack.

Born Nov. 26, 1920, in Wilmington, N.C., he lived in Oceanside for 20 years. He retired in 1979 from R.C.A. Service Company. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a radio operator on a B-24. He was an All-American in baseball and attended Laguna Beach High School. He worked for Daniels Cablevision in Carlsbad for 13 years. He was a ham radio operator as W6VSG for 56 years.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Patricia Smith of Oceanside; sons Dennis Smith and Rick Smith, both of Vista; sister-in-law Donna Easterling of Costa Mesa; and grandchildren Kelly, Jennifer, Bryan, Starlyn, Kristin, Tianna and Michael Smith.

A private cremation with scattering at sea is planned.

A. Lee Snyder, 77

SAN DIEGO - A. Lee Snyder, 77, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in East Troy, Wis., of heart failure.

Born Nov. 9, 1923, in Millersburg, Ohio, he lived in San Diego for 54 years. He worked in the missile and shuttle programs for 36 years for Convair and General Dynamics as a tool and die manufacturing representative. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Convair's coin, stamp, tropical fish, mineral and gem clubs.

Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Fitzpatrick Snyder of San Diego; daughters and son-in-law Kathleen Snyder of San Diego and Linda and Tom Shipman of Encinitas; and grandchildren Laura Shipman and Leslie Shipman.

A private memorial service will be held at his daughter's home in Encinitas in July.

A private cremation is planned with his ashes scattered.

The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Margaret Norton, 81

SAN MARCOS - Margaret Roberta "Bobbi" Norton, 81, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Pomerado Hospital in Poway.

Born Oct. 15, 1919, in Grainton, Neb., she lived in San Marcos for 2 1/2 years and La Cresenta for 30 years. She retired after 45 years on Oct. 1, 1986, as a registered nurse at Oakview Convalescent Home.

Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Floyd Norton on March 2, 1997. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Linda and David Cherry of Escondido and Judy and Michael Emmert of Auburn; brothers and sisters-in-law Bob and Betty Maupin of Billings, Mont., Clarence and Alyce Maupin of Scottsbluff, Neb., Wayne and Diane Maupin of Venango, Neb., and Wendell and Betty Maupin of Loveland, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Morris Myers of Eddyville, Neb., Maxine and Harden Young of Boise, Idaho and Isabel Kinney of Wallace, Neb.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service with viewing is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, May 23, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Brumit officiating. Further funeral services and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at United Methodist Church in Wallace, Neb., followed by burial at Morning View Cemetery in Wallace with the Rev. Buck officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Asia-Pacific Christian Ministries International, 1060 Church Ave., Gilroy, CA 95020.

Nathan Reed, 25

SANTA YSABEL - Nathan Eric Reed, 25, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, as a result of a traffic accident on Palomar Mountain.

Born April 5, 1976, he lived in Santa Ysabel and Ramona all his life. He grew up on the Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation and attended elementary and high school in Ramona. Later he attended Grossmont College for several semesters. He was a mentor in the American Indian Recruitment Program at San Diego State University. He taught Peon and language at the Santa Ysabel and other local Indian reservations to the area youth to retain their cultural identity. He was the organizer of the Santa Ysabel Annual Traditional Gathering.

Mr. Reed is survived by his mother, Glenna Reed of Ramona; sister Devon Lee Reed of San Diego; grandmother Noreen Reed of Santa Ysabel; great-grandmother Iva Hurtt of Arizona, many aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins.

An all-night wake will begin at dusk on Saturday, May 26 at the Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation gym with burial following on Sunday morning on the reservation.

Robert Earl, 79

CARDIFF - Robert Everett Earl, 79, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas.

Born March 20, 1922, in Bellwood, Neb., he lived in Cardiff for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association of San Diego, American Legion Post 416 of Encinitas, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5431 and San Dieguito Masonic Lodge 775 of Cardiff. He retired as a civil service building inspector at Camp Pendleton.

Mr. Earl is survived by his wife, Encarnita V. Earl of Encinitas; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Marie Earl of Vista; granddaughter Trisha Earl of Oceanside; sister Doris Nesbett of Oregon; and brother Richard Earl of Virginia.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Encinitas Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, at Encinitas Chapel followed by interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.

Steven Toth, 85

ESCONDIDO - Stephen J. Toth, 85, died Sunday, May 20, 2001.

Born Feb. 18, 1916, in Trenton, N.J., he lived in Escondido for 52 years. He retired in 1971 as a firefighter in civil service at Camp Pendelton. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1934 to 1955 during World War II, the Korean War and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He received medals for Korean Service, American Defense, American Area United Nations Service, Good Conduct, and World War II Victory. He served aboard the U.S.S. Arizona, Gamble, Fletcher, Lexington, Frank Knox and others. He was an instructor at the San Diego Recruiting station for two years. He was a charter member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 270-Escondido and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1513-Escondido. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, camping and hiking.

Mr. Toth is survived by his wife of 65 years, Violet J. Toth of Escondido; sons and daughter-in-law Stephen Toth of Warsaw, Mo., Thomas and Patricia Toth of Lake Wohlford; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Michael Lutsch; brother Andrew J. Toth of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Phoebe Ohnstad, 54

CARLSBAD - Phoebe Denise Ohnstad, 54, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Kaiser Hospital of a brain aneurysm.

Born April 11, 1947, in St. Paul, Minn., she lived in Carlsbad for 22 years. She was a former deputy city clerk of San Marcos for five years. She worked as a surgical pathologist administrator for UCSD Hospital for 10 years. She was a past president of the Soroptimist's San Marcos Chapter, La Costa Canyon Maverick's Booster Club and a graduate of the University of Maryland in 1970.

Mrs. Ohnstad was preceded in death by her father, Col. Arthur Allen, in 1989. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Peter Rolf of Carlsbad; mother Thora Allen of Sun City Center, Fla.; sons Anders and Joran Ohnstad of Carlsbad; and sisters and brothers-in-law Leah Marie and Keith Smelser of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Kareen and William Ecklund of North Oaks, Minn.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Encinitas with the Revs. Bill Harman and Molly Knutson-Keller officiating.

Donald Ross, 66

ESCONDIDO - Donald J. Ross, 66, died Friday, May 18, 2001.

Born May 28, 1934, in Boston, he lived in Escondido for 35 years. He was a self-employed electrician at Ross Electric. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Palomar Racing Club.

Mr. Ross is survived by his wife of 43 years, Florence Ross of Escondido; daughter Pamela Champion of San Diego; brothers Paul Ross of Foxboro, Mass., and Frank Ross of South Boston; and sisters Ruth Olson of Nashua, N.H., Eleanor Ross of Milton, Mass., Judy Peterson, Patricia McNeil and Carol Burns, all of Foxboro, Mass.

Visitation is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 1:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Barbara Cooper, 63

OCEANSIDE - Barbara L. Cooper, 63, died Saturday, May 19, 2001.

Born March 17, 1938, in Bridgeport, Conn., she lived in Oceanside for 40 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling and was in bowling leagues and tournaments for many years. She was a bowling coach for Junior Bowlers.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jerry Cooper of Oceanside; sons Gary, Bob, Ron, David and Jeff, all of Oceanside; daughter-in-law Maureen of Oceanside; brother Robert Hayes of Fairfield; and grandchildren Jeremy, Rebecca, Melanie and Johnny.

Viewing is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Oceanside Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Mission San Luis Rey with Anella Faye officiating. A celebration of life will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Vista Entertainment Center.

Robert Hill, 72

OCEANSIDE - Robert James Hill, 72, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his home.

Born Feb. 8, 1928, in New Jersey, he lived in Oceanside for 47 years.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and retired from civil service at Camp Pendelton. After retiring, he worked for J.A. Jones Management as an electrical contractor.

Mr. Hill is survived by his children and their spouses, Michele and Mike Verrett, Teresa and Jeremy Collis and Paul and Jimbo Hill, and grandchildren Ian, Elgin and Leighlan Verrett, all of Oceanside.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Mission San Luis Rey.

Margaret DiLeo, 65

SAN MARCOS - Margaret B. DiLeo 65, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas of heart and kidney disease.

Born May 8, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y. she lived in San Marcos. She retired in Sept. 1991 from Empire Blue Cross-Blue Shield. She was a member of O.R.T. of North County.

Mrs. DiLeo was preceded in death by her husband, Pasquale "Patsy" DiLeo in April 1989.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Della and Thomas Hyland of Oceanside; and grandchildren Andrew, Adam and Alex.

A graveside service was held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Robert McFarland, 88

SAN MARCOS - Robert James McFarland, 88, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at a Carlsbad care facility.

Born May 29, 1912, in Chicago, he lived in San Marcos for eight years. He had lived in Pacific Beach for about 52 years before moving to San Marcos .

He was a San Diego County veterinarian from 1940 to 1972.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the reserves as a lieutenant colonel. He graduated from Washington State in 1939 and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

He was a member of the Knights of Colombus and helped establish the San Diego County Livestock Department. He was part of the 1000 voice chorus that sang at the 1932 Olympic Games.

Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Rose McFarland on Sept. 7, 2000.

He is survived by his son, Robert F. McFarland of Carlsbad; daughters Maureen Huitt of Vista and Kathleen Pattison of Encinitas; sister Grace McFarland Crozier of Oceanside; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of remembrance will be celebrated at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, at St. John's Catholic Church in Encinitas. A graveside inurnment service with honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego. A private cremation is planned.

Raymond Stephany, 83

HEMET - Raymond Edward Stephany, 83, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet.

Born May 17, 1917, in Rochester, N.Y., he lived in Hemet for four years and was previously from North County.

He worked for Rochester Products Division of GM in Rochester for 33 years as a setup man. He was a U.S. veteran.

Mr. Stephany is survived by his daughter, Sandra Granville of Bufford, Ga.; son Raymond Stephany of Hemet; brother Gerald Stephany of Cameron Park; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Escondido.

Joseph Seufert Sr., 79

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Joseph F. Seufert Sr., 79, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital in Greensburg Pa.

He was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Baltimore, Md.

Prior to his retirement he was employed as plant superintendent for Chevron Asphalt Co. in Springdale, Pa. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Sea Lions.

Mr. Seufert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Flora Doll Seufert; sons Joseph F. Seufert Jr., of Irwin, Pa., and Kevin Seufert of Vista; grandchildren Joseph F. III, Kristi and Pamela Seufert.

Visitation is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 23 and Thursday May, 24, at Joseph F. Ott Funeral Home in Irwin, Pa.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Steve Lemak, 82

ENCINITAS - Steve Lemak, 82, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at a local hospital.

Born Nov. 25, 1918, in Bridgeport, Conn., he lived in Encinitas and San Diego County for 27 years. He retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service.

Mr. Lemak is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie H. Lemak of Encinitas; daughters and sons-in-law Dianne and Philip Pons of Williamsburg, Va., Marjorie Jackson of Pasadena and Susan and Lawrence Brickman of New York City; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with full military honors is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

Levi Taylor, 93

FALLBROOK - Levi Allen Barber Taylor, 93, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Silvergate Fallbrook Retirement Residence of heart disease.

Born Aug. 22, 1907, in Idaho, he lived in Fallbrook for 25 years. He worked for RCA.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his daughter, Penny Latham of Oregon.

Services have been held.

OCEANSIDE - Marvollee Jordan Colton, 81, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Torrey Pines Convalescent Hospital in La Jolla.

Born July 9, 1919, in Gorman, Texas, she lived in North County for 51 years.

She was retired after 29 years of working for Safeway Stores Inc. as a meat wrapper. She enjoyed bowling, quilting and the Padres.

Mrs. Colton is survived by her husband of 57 years, Clark Colton of La Jolla; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Kathie Colton of Encinitas; daughter and son-in-law Colleen and Boni Anderson of Soulsbyville; grandchildren Kristine Bodine, Ryan Mitchell, Jeff Colton, Courtney Dow, Jaime Smith and Lindsey Surendranath; and six great-grandchildren.
